There are historical facts that create a framework for this particular relationship, though, and it would be a fantasy to pretend that these real world facts do not impinge upon the relationship. Currently, Scotland and England are territories which constitute large parts of a sovereign state called the “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. Or, at least, it’s been called that officially since 1927 (and in reality was reduced to that territory in 1922 by the secession and reacquisition of independence by most of Ireland).
