The five kingdom classifications were proposed by R.H.Whittaker, an American plant ecologist in the year 1969.


Carolus Linnaeus in his Systema Naturae published in 1735 classified two kingdoms of living things.


He classified all existing organisms in two kingdoms by nutrition and their locomotion.


But this system was not seen as effective because it did not distinguish between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, unicellular and multicellular, photosynthetic and non-photosynthetics.


This made him propose the five-kingdom taxonomic classification of Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia.
