The residue is that part of the mixture that does not dissolve in water or the solvent being used.

In the experiment above we have ink and charcoal powder.

Ink forms an homogenous mixture with water whereas charcoal powder does not dissolve in water.

When the mixture is filtered we will ha e the results as follows :

Filtrate — mixture of ink and water.

Residue — charcoal powder with the color of the ink.
