The resistance offered by each bulb of the fairy light shown below is 20Ω.
Calculate
(i) the total resistance due to 5 such bulbs of the fairy light.
(ii) If potential difference of 50 V is applied to its terminal, calculate the current flowing through it.
(iii) What would happen if one of the bulbs got fused or turned dead? Also state what needs to be done in such situation.

Answer:

( 1 ) Resistance by bulb when taken in series is

R = 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20

= 100 ohms

Resistance by bulb when taken in parallel is

1/R = 1/20 + 1/20 + 1/20 + 1/20 + 1/20

1/R = 5/20

R = 20/5

R = 4 ohms

( 2 ) When potential diff is 50V then I = ?

I = V/R

= 50/100

=0.5 A

I = V/R

=50/4

=12.5A

( 3 ) If the connection is fused then the bulb should be replaced .

Parallel connection should be preferred because it offers less resistance and if one bulb got fused the others will glow which will not happen in a series connection .
