The British introduced the system of taxes in cash. The new land revenue policy and the money economy of the British government created deep resentment among the common Assamese people. The peasant were forced to take loans from Marwari and Bengali Mahajans who charged very high interest. This created a series of revolt against the British government in Assam over the subsequent years.
