a state has to surrendar its external relationes to the care of the company.
any form of negotiations were to made through a company.
the state was to accept a british resident as its hedquarters.
the company in turn was to protect the state from any foreign invasion.
the nizam of hyderabad ,the ruler ofmysore ,the peshwa and the sindia were the cheif rulers who accepted the subsidiay alliance system.
b = doctrine of lapse was coined by lord dalhousie who was a governor general of india (1848-1856)
according to doctrine of lapse
if the ruler if any dependent state died without a legitimate heir of a throne.
his state would directly be annexed or lapsed to the british empire.
so british annexed the states of sambhalpur,baghat, jhansi, udaipur and nagpur under the doctrine of lapse
