Answer:

The Revolt of 1857 was the first struggle for independence from the British. There was a clear lack of unity among the rebels and there was no common purpose among them during the revolt of 1857.

The revolt did not spread to all the parts of India instead it was confined to the Northern and Central India. Also, the rulers of Kashmir, Gwalior, and Hyderabad helped the British against the revolt. Therefore, the revolt failed because it was unorganised and scattered.

Even though the Revolt of 1857 had these drawbacks, it sowed seeds of nationalism among the Indians. The sacrifices made by Rani Laxmi Bai, Nana Saheb and Mangal Pandey served as a sources of inspiration for the future freedom fighters. The heroic struggle also established valuable traditions to the British rule.
