The East India company took a farman( a royal order ) from emperor aurangazeb, granting the m permission to trade duty free.

However, this applied only for the EIC,but the company officials, who ran side businesses, were expected to pay revenue, which they refused to pay, depriving the state of huge amounts of revenue.

So this caused a rebellion among the Bengal nawabs. It was started by Murshidabad Quli Khan, followed by his son Alivardi Khan, followed by his son Sirajuddaulah.

Sirajuddaulah attacked the military fortress of the EIC at Calcutta. So the Company officials at madras sent forces under Robert Clive to Bengal.after negotiations failed, Robert Clive led a direct military assault on the nawab at Plassey, and the nawab’s forces were crushed.

The main reason for this was that the forces under Mir Jafar, one of sirajuddaulah’s Commanders, never fought the war,as he was promised that he would become the next nawab.

Thus began the rule of the puppets......

But soon, Mir Jafar saw his mistake and rebelled, and was defeated at the battle of Buxar, and his nephew, Mir Quasim was made ruler. When he rebelled, Mir Jafar was reinstated, for a fees.when Mir Jafar died, though, the company had gotten tired of puppet rulers, and they decided to become rulers themselves.....

Sincerely hope that this is useful to you.
