The revolutionary journalist Jean-Paul
Marat commented in his newspaper
L'Ami du peuple (The friend of the
people) on the Constitution drafted by
the National Assembly:
'The task of representing the people
has been given to the rich ... the lot of
the poor and oppressed will never be
improved by peaceful means alone. Here
we have absolute proof of how wealth
influences the law. Yet laws will last only as long as the people
agree to obey them. And when they have managed to cast off
the yoke of the aristocrats, they will do the same to the other
owners of wealth.' what does this mean please help

Answer:

In this article a man called Jean - Paul Marat gave his opinion on the constitution ( a rule book which will say how a country is to be ruled ) which was created by the national assembly . He says that the work of administrating and governing people has been given to the rich people and they rich people won't be able to govern poor people if they don't make strict laws and punishments . He says that strict punishments should be given to people under the government so that they will not dare to disobey the law . He says that as only rich people are able to govern , weath is very much needed to influence and make the laws . But he also says that being rich wont be of any use to politicians if the poor people under them decide to disobey them . He also says that if poor people start to disobey a rich person then they will start to disobey the rules laid by other rich people too and if this happens then rich people won't be able to control the poor people anymore .

Some word meanings :

1) drafted - made , written

2) yoke - rope , ( it can also also mean a rope used to control someone )

3) aristocrats - rich and wealthy people
