Rhythmic movements of the heart (upper trace) cause synchronous movement of the bookhmg lamellae (lower trace). The latter movements were recorded with a photoplate with light reflected from foil placed on the lamellae in the atrium. Systolic and diastolic movements of the heart cause displacements (lO-30~) of the booklung lamellae. This should stir the blood in the bookhmg sinus and cause some inspiratory and expiratory movement of air through the spiracle and atrium.
