The ribcage and the cranium both protect internal organs. However, the bones of the ribcage can move, whereas those of the cranium cannot. What are the advantages of movement and lack of movement of the ribcage and cranium, respectively?

Answer:

The movement of the ribs is important for respiration. When the rib cage moves outwards the volume of lungs increase and thus we can inhale. If this were not the case it would be difficult to breathe. On the other hand the bones of the cranium do not show any mobility as they are tightly articulated to each other. And it's better that way because if those bones could move there would be no proper protection for the brain.

Hope it helps..
