Stratification in Rig Vedic Society!

Ever since the application of modern historical and philological methods of criticism to the study of ancient Sanskrit texts, a large number of scholarly and not-so-scholarly works have attempted the reconstruction of early Vedic society on the basis of the Rig-Veda; yet the picture of the Rig Vedic society continues to be hazy and controversial. In recent years, in a short span of five years, three eminent scholars—G.S. Ghurye, R.S. Sharma and Romila Thapar—have published monographs dealing with the subject and each of them has used tools provided by history and social anthropology.

Nevertheless, they arrive at very different conclusions. The work of Bruce Lincoln, which is published about the same time, exemplifies the continuing interest of western anthropologists in the theme. It adds a new dimension by attempting to establish the ecological context of Rig Vedic religion and society through a cross-cultural method. The multiplicity of paradigms and conflicting interpretations of evidence make an assessment of the theoretical and empirical bases of these historical-anthropological constructs an essential desideratum.
