It is an allegorical poem that brings forth the Christian themes of sin, penance and redemption. It expresses how a thoughtless and impulsive deed can result in a lifetime of guilt and repentance. The sin of killing of the albatross is violence against the God's creation. The sailors of the ship also regard it as a bad omen as it is after the death of the albatross that the weather becomes unfavorable for them to continue their journey. Therefore, the mariner is blamed for the miserable plight of the sailors and as a punishment for his sin, the dead body of the albatross is hung around the neck of the mariner instead of the cross.
