The civil society is a watchdog of democracy.
Exercising its freedom of expression, the civil society brings to light any oppressive move of the government or denial of democratic rights by government agencies.
It protests vehemently against such undemocratic acts and also forces the government by criticising it on various fronts, like legal, human rights violation, in the media etc.
It also uses various forums and instruments like the RTI and RTE to extract information and use this information to create awareness against undemocratic acts.
The civil society is largely united against human rights violation, oppression, autocracy  despite differences in opinion on various other matters.
Hence, civil society's role is vital and effective. Political agitation can gain popularity and momentum due to effective propaganda. This can be done effectively by the civil society. Education is a strong weapon that the civil society owns. They form political parties on newer ideologies and contest elections. They also might win and form governments to bring about change.
