While both ABA and ethylene are regarded as growth inhibitors and fruit ripeners they have some beneficial aspects as well. They help the plant to adapt to different stress situations by promoting dormancy, stomatal closure, preventing dehydration etc. They do cause apical dominance , growth retardation when in excess, delayed flowering which has economic implications as well.
