through the cardiac sphincter (which closes to prevent food backing up the esophagus, causing heartburn). The stomachs function is to store food, begin digestion, and provide acids to kill microorganisms. The muscle layers of stomach are more complex than those of esophagus and result in churning motion when they contract.

Stomach lining contains glands that secrete gastric juice, including chief cells which secrete pepsinogen and parietal cells which produce hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL changes pepsinogen to pepsin, an enzyme which initiates protein digestion. Presence of HCL keeps ph of stomach low (1.6 - 2.4); a layer of mucin prevents stomach from digesting itself. Stomach also secretes gastric lipase, an enzyme that begins fat digestion.

After a time in the stomach, food (called chyme in this liquified state) passes through the pyloric sphincter into the duodenum, the first of three region of the small intestine. The products of the liver and pancreas are received here. The other two regions are called the jejunum (next) and ileum (last).

Remainder of digestion and all nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine. The inside surface of the small intestine is covered by folds containing small projections called villi. The villi carry smaller projections called microvilli; these are filled with capillaries and lymph vessels; it is here that digested food is absorbed and transferred to the circulatory system.

Answer:

ROLE OF HCL IN STOMACH

Explanation:

1. ACID MAKES THE MEDIUM ACIDIC .

2. KILLS HARMFUL BACTERIA WHICH SOMETIMES ENTER THROUGH THE FOOD .

THE COVERING OF INNER STOMACH IS DONE BY MUCUS WHICH PROTECTS THE STOMACH FROM GETTING EFFECTED.

ROLE OF VILLI

1. IT INCREASE THE SURFACE AREA IN THE SMALL INTESTINE WHICH INTURN HELP IN ABSORPTION OF FOOD COMPLETELY.

THE UNDIGESTED FOOD IS THEN TRANSPORTEDTO LARGE INTESTINE. ...
