Putta Basappa played an important role in the struggle against Britishers.

  • There had been a number of rebellions from different regions to fight for freedom against the British colonization. one such rebellion from  the place called Kodagu was Putta Basappa.
  • Putta Basappa started a Rebel Association by encouraging people to support the Rebel government so that the taxes that the farmers had been paying on  the growing tobacco relaxed. The growth of his popularization in this area came when he killed a man who was torturing people and was known for his brutality.
  • The support of people  encouraged him  to move ahead and fight for freedom against Britishers. He and other Rebels started marching towards the Mangalore Fort from Panai Mangalore.
  • This act of Basappa created a sense of tension among Britishers and they wanted to protect the Fort of Mangalore hence allotting an army to find these rebels.
  • due to the evidence they got from Kodagu about Putta Basappa, he and some of his friends were captured and sentenced to death.
