The roof of a home rises vertically a distance of 8 ft through a horizontal distance of 12 ft. Find the pitch (slope) of the roof.

so the answer is 2/3 (simplified). 8 is the distance that goes up(rise) and 12 is the distance that you go vertically(run). Just remember this: you have to rise before you can run. That is a way to calculate slope, also which is basically what you are trying to find in this problem.
