Given,

The height of the roof = 16 metres

The distance between the peg and the wall = 12 metres

To find,

Length of the rope.

Solution,

We can easily solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process.

We have to apply the Pythagoras theorem here.

In this case,

Height of roof = Height = 16m

Distance between peg and wall = Base = 12m

Length of rope = Hypotenuse = Let, x m

(Assume x as a variable to do the further mathematical calculations.)

Now,

(x)² = (16)²+(12)²

x² = 256+144

x² = 400

x = 20

Hence, the length of the rope is 20 metres.
