The purpose of the act was to curb the growing nationlist upsurge in the country. Mahatma Gandhi, among other Indian leaders, was extremely critical of the act and argued that not everyone should be punished in response to isolated political crimes. Indians disapproved this act in the following ways:

  • Rallies were organised in various cities, workers went on strike in railways, workshop and offices were closed down
  • a peaceful protest meeting was organised at jallianwala bagh in Amritsar.
