He was born in Stornoway, United Kingdom in 1754 and died in Kolkata in the year 1821. He surveyed Southern India and was ordered to survey the region of Mysore, after the victory of British over Tipu Sultan in the year 1799.

He was the first to make maps of the Mysore region along with important archaeological landmarks.
