Henry VIII's Reformation Parliament [1529 - 1536], changed the character of Parliament and of English Government.

  • In a few years, the Parliament made laws affecting most aspects of national life which had previously been under the Church alone.
  • The Parliament made laws which transferred religious authority from the Pope to English Crown.
  • The Reformation Parliament thus asserted the arbiter, or sovereignty, of the Parliament in making statue, or more precisely the sovereignty of Crown-in-Parliament.
  • The Parliament only existed by the monarch's will, but King of Great Britain and his immediate successors knew that they might best effect their will only through the assent of Parliament in statute.
