The salary of a clerk is increased by 30%, by what per cent should the increase salary be decreased in order to restore the initial salary.

  • Let the old salary be ₹ x .
  • After the increase, the salary will become x×\frac{30}{100} + x
  •   = x × ( 0.3 + 1 ) = 1.3 x
  • Let the percentage required to decrease the new salary to get the old salary be y ,
  • 1.3x - ( \frac{y}{100} × 1.3x ) = x
  • ⇒  0.3x = \frac{y}{100} × 1.3x
  • y = 23.0769
  • Therefore the new salary should be decreased by 23.0769 per cent to get the initial salary.
