Let the sales be 'x'......

1st year:-

x+ (40/100)x = x + (2x/5) = 7x/5

2nd year:-

7x/5 - {(30/100)× (7x/5)}

= 7x/5 - (21x/50)

= 49x/50

So, finally it becomes 49x/50.....

Net gain / loss = Final - initial...

= (49x/50)-x

= -x/50..

So, their is loss of x/50....

Now we have to find % of (x/50) of x..

 \frac{ \frac{x}{50} }{x}  \times 100 \\  \\  \frac{1}{50}  \times 100 \\  \\  = 2\%

Therefore, they had loss of 2%...
