The scale of a map is given 1:800000. Two cities are 1cm apart on the map. Determine the actual distance between them. (clue= 1cm is equal to 8 km)

This Ratio of map distance to the corresponding ground distance is independent of units of measurement and is called representative fraction (R.F.).

The representative fraction can be very easily found for a given engineer’s scale.

If the scale is

R.F.=1/200000

=1/2x 1000x100

1cm=2000m

The scale of a map is given as= 1:200000

Two cities are 3 cm apart on the map.

=3x 2000

=6000m

=6000/1000 Km

=6Km
