Given,

Scale of the map = 1 : 500000

Map distance = 18 cm

Another real distance = 165 km

To find,

Real distance for first case and map distance for second case.

Solution,

We can simply solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process.

Now, according to scale data,

1 cm of map distance = 500000 cm real distance

1 cm map distance = 5 km real distance

18 cm map distance = 18×5 = 90 km real distance

For, second case,

5 km real distance = 1 cm map distance

1 km real distance = 1/5 cm map distance

165 km real distance = 165/5 = 33 cm map distance

Hence, real distance between two cities (case no.1) is 90km and map distance between two cities (case no. 2) is 33 cm.
