Answer:

“The scariest thing that happened to me I didnt know actually happened until the following day. I lived in an apartment in a not so good part of a dangerous city with my boyfriend who worked nights. One day our friend came over and called me to let him in our building in a hurry.

Turns out this guy had been crouched by my car in the parking lot and had approached our friend and closed in on him. My friend pulled out a weapon and the guy ran off.

Upstairs I noticed that the guy had left a green bundle near my car and assumed he would be back for it. It made me uncomfortable so I suggested we call the cops. Not 5 minutes after a cop showed up to ask where the guy had gone swat, K9, and about 10 cars showed up and swarmed our area.

Turns out the guy had escaped from county the night before with two other guys. He was in jail for assault with a deadly weapon and repeated domestic violence offenses. He had climbed the fence in the yard behind our building where our landlord kept his camper, broken into the camper, and stayed there the night before.

He had stolen all the electronics out of it as well as a butcher knife and was trying to break into my car before my friend showed up.

I had been alone the night before and had taken my dog down to the yard to go to the bathroom. I noticed that the barbed wire on the top of the fence had fallen down, and my dog was nervous. But I brushed it off. The guy had been in the camper watching me the whole time and I never knew it.”

I was interning at a firm in Gurgaon for a couple of months in between my MBA. This was in 2011. The first weekend, I went to meet a friend who was staying a few kms away. We had an early dinner and I started back to my place at around 7. I was staying in an apartment near DLF cyber city. So I got down at the nearest metro station, and asked a couple of autos the fare to my place. The distance would have been close to 2kms. Rs. 150 was the quoted price. I snorted at them and started walking. (So naive!). It was only 8pm by then. I knew Delhi/Gurgaon was not safe, but the number of people on the road silenced any worries I had. Honestly, I don't believe I thought too much about it. After all, it was one of the busiest parts of Gurgaon.

So I started walking and it was fine. The road was well lit, many cars were passing by. I called up the same friend I had just met. Was telling her something about meeting the next day. I didn't realise that to reach my place I had to cross this stretch of road where both sides of the road had some construction work going on (metro work maybe?). I had never bothered looking out of my vehicle when traveling on this road before. The streetlights here were farther apart. There were no shops. No pedestrians. No traffic block either. Many cars were passing by at above 60 kmph speeds.

While on the call, I heard a car slow down near me. The driver of the car shouted out a hello. I looked at him. He was well dressed, looking like any other corporate guy around.

The dude- Hey, get in.. I'll drop you somewhere.

Me - <Continuing my walk> Hey no thanks. I'm almost home.

The dude - <slowly driving along side me> Come on.. no worries.. just get in..

Me - <Creeped out by the dude not leaving me alone, picking up my pace and muttering about what's going on to my friend on call> No no. You continue.

The dude still continued driving slowly and cajoling me. If I had any doubt about his intentions before, they took a turn for the worse on seeing him relentlessly pursuing me even after seeing that I was scared.

At this point, I was looking here and there frantically and that's when I noticed the no shops-no pedestrians part. There were cars passing by, but at those speeds, they couldn't see what was happening.. they were of no use. I was half running by now. The dude was still persuading me to get in.

Then I saw an auto approaching from behind.. I lifted my hand to hail it down only to see that there were 4-5 boys laughing and creating a ruckus in it. They were labourers and looked pretty drunk. Call me judgemental, but at that time I was scared sh!t and instincts told me to be scared of that bunch more than the lone creepy dude. Seeing me, they shouted aa jao aa jao.

That exact moment is the most scared I have ever been. This was real. Not some artificial faces or sounds in some horror movie.

That I'm writing comfortably about it now says that I escaped from the moment unscathed. Just behind that auto, was another auto. He was my savior. He saw the scene, overtook the previous auto and stopped near me. I didn't even hail it down. No words were spoken, I just got in. He drove away fast without even asking me where to. I was trembling by then. After some 500 metres, we reached an area where there were many pedestrians and vehicles. I asked to be dropped there. Thanked him and asked him how much. Would you believe it, he said he didn't want anything? I was so shaken that I barely gasped out thanks and got down. I still regret not paying him whatever was there in my wallet. I walked the rest of the 300 metres home, jumping at every sound and looking behind me most of the way.
