Displacement is the shortest distance covered from one point to another. He reached the point from where he started distance from home to school is 1km. So the distance is 2 km because he went to school and came back to home but the displacement is zero.

The distance traveled of the boy is 2 km because started from his home &covered the distance of 1 km to the school and again he came back to home covering the distance of 1 km. In total he covered a distance of 2 km by traveling from home to school and once again coming back to home.
His displacement is zero because his initial point and ending point are same.
