Distance is the path travelled by an object.

Displacement is the shortest path between source and destination.

DISTANCE is scalar quantity and Displacement is vector quantity.

-----------------------------------------------

Here DISTANCE between school and boy's House is 1km.

He goes to school from home and comes back to home.

So TOTAL DISTANCE he travelled is :

=1km +1km

=2km

But the displacement travelled by body is zero = 1km - 1km=0 km

As the source and destination is same.
