The displacement of second hand in half revolution is 14cm.

The second hand of a timepiece is 7cm.

We have to find the displacement in half revolution by it.

Concepts :

  • Revolution : When an object circles 360° around another object is known as revolution of that object.
  • Rotation : When an object circles 360° around its own axis is known as rotation of that object.
  • Displacement : It is the minimum separation between the final position to the initial position.

Here,

Length of second hand of a timepiece = radius of circular path = 7 cm

Displacement in half revolution = the minimum separation between the final position to its initial position.

See diagram, It is clearly shown that the minimum separation between the final to its initial position is the diameter of timepiece.

∴ Displacement in half revolution = diameter of timepiece = 2 × 7 cm = 14cm

Therefore the displacement of second hand in half revolution is 14cm.
