Given : The segment joining L(-2, 3) and N(4, -1) intersects the Y - axis in M.

To Find  : the ratio LM : MN.

Solution:

L = ( - 2 , 3)

N = ( 4 , - 1)

intersect Y axis at M

Hence M = ( 0 , y )

Let say LM : MN = 1  : k

=> (0 , y) divided LN in ratio  1  : k

=> 0  =   ( 1 * 4 + k(-2))/(k + 1)

=> 0 = 4 - 2k

=> k = 2

Hence 1 : k = 1: 2

so LM : MN  =  1  : 2
