The sex of new borne individual in some cases is largely determined genetically but in some cases, the sex of the individual is determined by some other factors too.

In reptiles the temperature of the surrounding environment determines the sex of the offspring. Some reptiles such as american alligator which produces  male offspring if the incubation temperature is 33 ºC and produces a female if the incubation temperature is 30 ºC.

In Drosophilla, the ratio of the autosomes and X chromosomes determines the gender of the drosphilla. If the ratio is 1 then the gender of the fruit fly would be female and if the ratio is 0.5 then the gender would be male.

In some arthopods for example amphipod crustacean Gammarus duebeni produces males if they are mating early in season, and females if mating later.
