The sex cells (gametes) have only half the number of chromosomes
So the sperm cell will have half and ova will have half
When the ova gets fertilised by the sperm, the halves combine and original number of chromosomes are restored

• Since in sexual reproduction, fusing gametes come from two sexually distinct individuals, offsprings show distinct characters. Furthermore, during the formation of sperm and ova, crossing-over takes place between homologous (similar) chromosomes. The sperm contains half of the genetic material and the other half is contained by ova, now the new cells have same amount of hereditary material as their parent cell.
