The shade loving plants are called sciophytes.

* These plants can survive well in shade,i.e. in areas having less sunlight because they require low intensity of sunlight for growth and development.

* It is because of the presence of larger photosynthetic units in them that helps them to grow and function even in less sunlight.

* The properties that make them stand out in low intensity of sunlight are:

- thin leaves

- chlorophyll content per leaf is more

- epidermal cells are lens shaped[ helps in focussing of sunlight]

- a red cell layer.
