To the human eye, the moon appears round, because of its Spherical shape.The actually shape of the Moon is that of a Flattened Ball (i.e. Oblate spheroid)

Explanation:

  • For a  waxing or waning lunar phase, the term "crescent" or "increscent" is used , while the term Decrescent  representing the waning Phase or the final quarter

The shape of the moon is not Fixed .The different shapes of the moon that we see is because the moon revolves around the earth ,this phenomenon is refereed to as the  Phases of the moon.

The three shapes of the moon that are commonly visible are  :

  1. Crescent Moon: A very small curved portion of the moon visible to us and has the  shape of a crescent.
  2. Half Moon: Moon appears like a semicircle.
  3. Full Moon: Moon appears  like a complete circle.
