The shell of an egg is dissolved by dipping in into a beaker containing dilute hydrochloric acid. The shell is mostly calcium carbonate. A thin outer skin now encloses the egg. Now the egg is dipped in clear water. The shell shows some changes due to the process of osmosis.

a) Name the thin outer skin enclosing the cell.
b) What type of solution is the shell dipped in the second time?(hypotonic/hypertonic/isotinic)
c) Name the type of osmosis shown by the cell.
d) What will happen to RBC when it is dipped in the same type of solution?
e) What changes in the cell will you find when it is dipped in a concentrated salt solution?

Answer:

B) the egg placed in salt solution shrink. that shrinking is due to exosmolasis

a)it becomes as a rubber

Egg shells are basically calcium carbonate, if you put them in HCl it will make pores and will make it a kind of semipermeable membrane. since water moves from lower solute concentration to higher which we call it osmosis, so water moves out from egg to salt solution making the egg to shrink

a) Eggshell.

b) Hypotonic solution.

c) Egg placed in salt solution shrink. that shrinking is due to exosmolasis.

d) RBCs (Red Blood Corpuscles) will swell if they are placed in a hypotonic solution. The cells will gain water by osmosis. The cells might burst and rupture if they are placed in hypotonic solution for a longer time.

e) Egg shells are basically calcium carbonate, if you put them in Hydrochloric acid it will make pores and will make it a kind of semipermeable membrane. since water moves from lower solute concentration to higher which we call it osmosis, so water moves out from egg to salt solution making the egg to shrink.
