Answer:

Yes, the picture of a ship that was found floating in the air was a mere optical illusion.

Superior Mirage:

This certain illusion was found due to a rare phenomenon known as superior mirage. It occurs when dense air settle right above the water of the sea and causes an extra-ordinary bending of light. This phenomena caused that illusion.

Usually, we know that cold air always stays atop warm air which produces normal vision but this phenomena, but when the cold air is below the warm air, it produces a totally different image such as this one of a ship floating in the air.

This phenomena is known to have made people view a variety of objects that can't be viewed if normal refraction takes place.

Scientists have termed this sighting as an extremely rare sight as this phenomena rarely occurs in the regions of Britain. Superior mirage is more common in regions that are much more closer to the poles.

Knowledge Bytes:

⇒ Mirage

A mirage is an optical illusion where certain atmospheric cause light beams to bend in a rather high refractive manner making us view an object which is actually located at a different angle even further away. A superior mirage has a minor difference when compared to it as in such an illusion, the object seems to be located a little above the actual flat surface.

⇒ Optical Illusion

Optical illusions are various sights that have extreme difference from the actual sight caused due to various reasons prevailing in the environment.
