The SI unit of energy is Joule. It was named because of the experiments on the mechanical equivalent of heat of the scientist James Prescott Joule. He revealed the relationship among heat and mechanical work, which direct to the development of the laws of thermodynamics.

1 joule is equal to 1-newton meter

One joule also equals to the energy necessary to move an electric charge of one coulomb during an electric potential difference of one volt (J = C • V).
