Let AB = ( x - 1 ) , BC = ( 3x ) and AC = (3x + 1).

As, hypotenuse is the longest side in right angled triangle so AC = hypotenuse.

We can take any value AB or BC as base and perpendicular. Answer will be the same.

Applying Pythagoras theorem ;

( Perpendicular ) ² + ( Base )² = ( Hypotenuse )²

(x-1)² + (3x)² = (3x + 1)²

x² + 1 - 2x + 9x² = 9x² + 1 + 6x

x² - 2x - 6x + 1 - 1 = 0

x² - 8x = 0

x ( x - 8 ) = 0

x = 8 cm.

Hope it helps...
