Well at those times Sun was used for many of calculation purposes. So even the disappearance of moon had puzzled people over that time. Finally when they arrived at a conclusion that moon revolves around the earth they felt contented about what was happening.
But that was not the same case with the sun. During Solar eclipse, people of those times thought that sun had been their source of all day to day calculations. So they were frightened for 2 reasons:
1. Disappearance of Sun leads to loss of calculations and was a bad omen
2. Could not understand why this happened at times at different parts of year
Hence sight of solar eclipse frightened people. Also rays of sun during this period has more than 100 X power than original due to which various diseases can occur which further worsened their fright and situation.
They were afraid that something abd or ominous was going to happen in their lives, and since they were mostly ignorant, they feared eclipse to bring along a large tragedy to their lives.
They could not explain the occurrence in scientific terms and feared for calamities to come.
