HELLO!!

ANSWER:

This is from the prose His First Flight written by Liam O' Flaherty.

The story is of a young seagull which was afraid of flying and so, he was on his ledge while his parents and his two brothers and sisters had flown away.

The sight of the food maddened him.

Here, him refers to the young seagull. He was afraid of flying and remained on his ledge. He didn't have anything to eat on the ledge and was very hungry. He saw his family members rejoicing the food. So, the sight of the food maddened him because he was hungry.

Next, his mother pretended to offer food to him. So, when he was trying to take the food, his mother moved and he was about to fall. But, the very next moment he realised that he was flying. Thus, he made his first flight.

The young seagull was very hungry and it was this hunger that ultimately made it fly. Not being able to control its hunger, it dived at the food which was in its mother’s beak and his hunger overpowered his fear of the sea. The natural reaction of its body was only to fly.
