True, the division sign/symbol (÷) was not used for this purpose in ancient times.

Earlier it was called the 'obelisk' and was first used in 1659 by J. H. Rahn who was a swiss mathematician. This symbol was brought about and popularised in London and then other parts of the world by Thomas Bracker who was an English mathematician and translated a lot of Rahn's works. It is now called the obelus and is used worldwide by the people as a division symbol.
