Let the sum be x.

=> (x * 10 * 7/100 * 2) - (x * 12 * 5/100 * 2) = 40

=> (70x/200) - (60x/200) = 40

=> 10x/200 = 40

=> 10x = 8000

=> x = 800.

Hence, the sum is 800.
