let the required sum be rs.x

SI on Rs.x at 8%per annum for 21/2 years

=Rs.(x×8×2/200)=Rs. 16x/200=4x/50=2x/25

Si on rs.x at 12%per annum for 3 years

=Rs.(x×12×3/100)=Rs.36x/100=9x/25

4x/25-9x/25=96

=>4x-9x=96×25

=> - 5x=96×25

=>x=96×25/5=96x - 5 = - rs480

hence the required sumis Rs. - 480
