Answer:

Let the sum be Rs.x

Case I:

Time (T)=3 years

Rate (R)=5%

Sum or Principal value(P)=Rs.x

Simple Interest (S1)=P×R×T/100

=x×5×3/100

=3x/20

Case II

Principal and Rate is same but Time (T)=4 years

So,

Simple Interest (S2)=P×R×T/100

=x×5×4/100

=x/5

Now,

A.T.Q,

S2-S1=42

x/5 - 3x/20 =42

:4x-3x/20=42

:x/20=42

:x=42×20

=840

Hence, sum is Rs.840.
