The Singh sabhas promoted reform by spreading modern education through the Khalsa schools and colleges

EXPLANATION:

  • During the 2nd half of the century, the expression of desire and protest for transformation were enunciated by way of different reform movements. These movements intended at reforming and democratising the religious outlook and social institutions of the people of India. The Sikh community too likewise did not remain unaffected by the growing tide of progressive and rationalist ideas of the 19th century. The 'bursting forth of a new movement' known as the Singh Sabha movement brought new life to the 'Sikhs and revived their religion'.
  • The movement was founded in the year 1873, with a 2-fold objective. One was to ensure modern western education available to all the Sikhs, and two to counter the 'proselytising activities' of Hindu revivalists and Christian missionaries. A network of 'Khalsa schools/colleges' was set up across Punjab. The 'Singh Sabha' by spurring the cultural and intellectual processes affected a new dimension to the inner life of the 'Sikh community and expanded its heritage'.
