Respiration is an important process of all life forms.

In the humans, respiration comprises of inhalation and exhalation.

During the inhallation process, air is breathed in and it expands the chest cavity by lowering the diaphragm.

During the exhalation process, the reverse happens, the diaphragm moves back to its initial position, the size of the chest cavity shrinks.
