the skull forms of solid sheet of protection and the ribs form a cage . why do you think the Rib cage is not a solid sheet like the skull .which offers better protection the sheet or the cage. explain your answer

if ribcage was a solid then it was difficult to inhale and exhale the air.as it is not a solid sheet like skull we can easily breathe

The only thing I could think of was weight. But the gaps in between ribs are pretty small, so I don't think that would be a deciding factor.
Edit: people say flexibility. Why not several overlapping plates, like plate armor (as in a breast plate)? I feel like that would be a lot better at stopping something like a claw.
