Light from the sun near the horizon passes through thicker layers of air and larger distances in the Earth's atmosphere before reaching our eyes. At noon, the Sun appears white as only a little of the blue and violet colors are scattered by the particles present in the atmosphere. Near the horizon, most of the lights having shorter wavelengths such as blue and violet, are scattered away by the particles. Therefore the light reaching our eyes is only of longer wavelengths. Red is such a color with long wavelengths thus giving rise to the reddish appearance of the sky.
