Answer:

the feeding of the reactor with raw material, i.e. with nutrients, is combined with an inoculation by mixing the stream of raw sludge with the stream of seed sludge (active sludge from the reactor) usually in a ratio 1 : 2 to 1 : 4. The preheating usually occurs while the mixed sludge is fed to the reactor. Because the seed sludge is taken from the reactor in a relatively large quantity and backfed together with raw material, a mixing of the reactor occurs at the same time. Simultaneously the reactor contentis mixed thoroughly e.g. by gas diffusion so that the transport of nutrients and metabolism products together with the equalization of solids concentration and temperature balance is perfect. During all this time the necessary amount of heat energy is transmitted to the sludge by heat exchange so that the process temperature will be kept within given limits
